What economic crisis?
by Ragan Sutterfield 7/24/8
plentymag.com/blogs/notebook/2008/07/what_economic_crisis.php
...Working on the farm reminds me that the economy of the nightly news is only one economy, an overly simple economy that has long ignored what it could not incorporate into dollars and cents and markets. As that economy spirals out of control and meets its natural limits, I am not worried. I only hope that all of us will readjust our sense of value to a more complete system of reckoning, before the economy of mean value collapses against the firm surface of the earth.

We've at most ten years to shift the whole world from fossil fuels and nuclear. These two industries have become subsidized global scams which profit from actively hindering renewable, distributed energy - not by successfully competing in the free market. These concerns have way more money than good sense or morality. It's becoming clear they don't even have good business sense, as is evidenced by the fact that they are leading humanity in an epochal extinction crisis.

...The number of endangered invertebrates is large and growing. The current rate of destruction and degradation of natural habitats is so great that there are not nearly enough biologists to even catalog, much less study, the species suddenly on the edge of extinction. Now is the time for agencies, scientists, conservationists, and land managers to promote the conservation of imperiled insects.
Although Aldo Leopold was not an entomologist he summed it up well in his book Round River:

"If the land mechanism as a whole is good, then every part is good, whether we understand it or not. If the biota, in the course of eons, has built something we like but do not understand, then who but a fool would discard seemingly useless parts? To keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering."...

...The power of the Negative Raw Material Cost

...The grandfather of negative raw material costs: Composting...

The application of control is what distinguishes composting from the natural rotting and other decomposition that generally occurs...

landfills are designed to be extremely compact, thus limiting the circulation of oxygen. "Landfill gas" is one of the by-products of anaerobic decomposition and is comprised primarily of carbon dioxide and methane. This effect is so extreme that the anaerobic decomposition of organic waste is the #1 producer of methane gas in the US. Methane not only smells like fart, but is also the most potent of all the greenhouse gases (it contributes 25 times more to climate change than carbon dioxide).

However, if we were to take the same banana peel and place it into a compost pile it would undergo decomposition with oxygen (or aerobic decomposition). In such an aerobic system the decomposition process relies on aerobic bacteria that break down the organic matter into humus, without any harmful gas emissions. More over, the end product, humus or compost, is a fantastic plant growth agent. Just listen to any expert gardener and they will tell you that the solution to any gardening problem lies with compost.

Other than the environmental benefit to composting (reduction of garbage in our landfills and in turn, the reduction of methane) there is a tremendous economic benefit, and thus, the fundamentals of a modern eco-capitalist business model.

In New Jersey, a landfill charges on average $90 to deposit one ton of garbage. On a national basis we produce roughly 12 and 14 billion tons of waste annually of which over 80% is organic...Since the composting industry magazine, BioCycle, conducted its first "State of Garbage" survey in 1989, the number of industrial composting sites across America has increased from 651 in 1988, to 1,407 in 1990, to 2,981 in 1992. Today there are over 4,000 sites across the United States...

World Revolution Finally Comes to the United States

Let's make it the Revolution of Love. Arrogance of the "educated" and routine business decisions led to the temporarily successful strategy to hinder the poor and minority vote, as more poor and minorities are Democratic than Republican. Deciding to eat the poor (and that IS a large part of what is actually going on right now) is ultimately suicidal, though. Now the Republicans and the visibly wealthy are going to need to be defended. Each creature (human or otherwise) is sacred, and acts according to it's own lights as best it can see; to refer to some Republicans as criminals is technically correct, but (just as with any other pejorative language) demeans the "criminal" to less than human status. Our criminal justice system is partly based on forgiveness and re-education, partly on lower motivations like revenge and the desire to enslave captive populations for profit. A criminal is a law-breaker, so what about all those laws that have stacked the deck to make the rich richer and the poor poorer? Are those who have been ensnared into impossible situations - literally between rocks and hard places - bad people because they had no choice? If you can't imagine what I'm talking about, you've never been poor. But you will likely be poor soon - the rich are getting richer, but there are fewer and fewer numbers of them.

From the Humane Society of the United States:

When you see meat, egg, or dairy products with the claim "Natural" on the packaging, it means the product:
A. Came from an animal who ate a natural diet?
B. Came from an animal who was raised in a natural environment?
C. Contains no colors or other additives during processing?
D. All of the above?
Answer: C
The claim "natural" on animal product packaging has no relevance to animal welfare. It does not refer to the animal's diet or environment, and only refers to how the meat, egg, or dairy is processed either after slaughter (in the case of meat) or after it has been taken from the animal (in the case of eggs and dairy).

Bush's Blood-Orgy in Somalia: "They Are Slaughtering Somalis Like Goats"
by Mike Whitney
...millions of Somalis have been forced to flee their homes and relocate to tent cities in the south because of Bush's support for the Ethiopian army's invasion...It should be no great surprize that the western media has stubbornly refused to report on the rising death-toll in Somalia, choosing instead to focus all of their attention on America's "villain du jour", Robert Mugabe. Mugabe is next on the neocon's list for regime change...At least 2.6 million Somalis are now facing famine due to acute food shortages spurred by a prolonged drought, violence and high inflation... The real motives behind the invasion were oil and geopolitics. According to most estimates 30 per cent of America's oil will come from Africa in the next ten years. Bush's new warlord-friends in the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) have already indicated a willingness to pass a new oil law that will encourage foreign oil companies to return to Somalia. The same oil giants that are now lining up in Iraq will soon be making their way to Somalia as well. The Horn of Africa is also critical for its deep-water ports and strategic location for future military bases. It's all part of the Grand Schema for reconfiguring the region to accommodate America's hegemonic ambitions.

Humanitarian Catastrophe: "The Ethiopian invasion has destroyed all the life-sustaining systems"

Heavy fighting and artillery fire have reduced large parts of Mogadishu to rubble. More than 700,000 people have been forced to leave the capital with nothing more than what they can carry on their backs. Entire districts have been evacuated and turned into ghost towns. The main hospital has been bombed and is no longer taking patients. Ethiopian snipers are perched atop rooftops across the city. Over 3.5 million people are now huddled in the south in tent cities without sufficient food, clean water or medical supplies. It is without question the greatest humanitarian crisis in Africa today...

Turning algae into ethanol, and gold
by Carli Ghelfi, Cleantech Group 6/11/8
media.cleantech.com/2961/algal-biofuels-algenol-ethanol-solazyme-sonora-mexico

...Algenol claims to use algae, sunlight, CO2 and seawater in closed bioreactors to produce ethanol...

Woods told Cleantech Group today that because his company does not use freshwater and does not harvest the algae, the process is much less expensive...

...said it is expecting yields of 6,000 gallons per acre per year, and expects to increase that figure to 10,000 by year end...

“Basically we can take in 1.5 million tons of CO2 and convert it into 100 million gallons of ethanol,”...

...process occurs in bioreactors that are three-feet by fifty-feet and shaped like soda bottles, said Woods.

According to Woods, during the process, algae consumes sunlight and more than 90 percent of the system's CO2 through photosynthesis, wherein the sugars are converted into ethanol. The ethanol is immediately pumped out and evaporates into the bioreactor which is captured every night.

“This process overcomes the enormous problems other companies face,” said Woods. “We don’t use food. We don’t use feedstock. We don’t use freshwater,”...
