The world is dealing badly with the much more limited change we face today. These can all be effectively addressed. They are not...because powerful vested interests feel threatened by the solutions...

The 1980's was a remarkable decade in international events: the Cold War was coming to an end, and the U.S. military-industrial complex was facing spending cuts, with myriad economic ramifications. The U.S. had gone through its longest period of peace since the end of World War I, and many Americans were calling for a Peace Dividend. While it may seem coincidental that the war on drugs was contemporaneous with the end of the Cold War and was punctuated by the Iran-Contra affair, a closer look at the war on drugs reveals disturbing patterns.
Critics of the Cold War have long pointed out that the Cold War was a convenient vehicle for the military-industrial complex to acquire an increasing share of the federal budget, regardless of the decline in threat posed by the Soviet Union. The war on drugs, it has been noted, arrives with all the familiar rubrics of constant threat and ceaseless terror...ex-DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) agent Michael Levine has commented, "with the fade of communism (the Pentagon and CIA) are building a pretext for maintaining their budgets." (Esquire, March 1991, pg. 136) Indeed, after Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, the rhetoric of the war on drugs changed, with the Bush administration declaring victory in the war against drugs late that year...

Pitt scientists get $1.3M grant for bird flu vaccine
by Jennifer Bails
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Friday, August 25, 2006
University of Pittsburgh researchers said Thursday they have received a $1.3 million federal grant to begin production of a promising new bird flu vaccine they hope will protect people from the deadly virus.
Pitt virologist Dr. Andrea Gambotto announced in January he had genetically engineered a vaccine that protected 100 percent of mice and chickens from illness and death caused by a strain of avian influenza that has decimated poultry flocks and killed dozens of people in Asia...
The vaccine will be created and rigorously tested in Pitt's Good Manufacturing Practices laboratory, a "clean" facility in Hazelwood that meets the federal criteria for making biological products that will be administered to people...

...Energy Independence would require a change in the way we live
Solar, wind, biomass and other technologies could only make the US achieve "energy independence" if Americans were to radically reduce energy consumption. These steps would include
* abandoning jet travel (which won't be powered by windmills or solar cells),
* eating food locally and in season (which will be difficult given the near total amnesia in our society about how to grow food or even where food comes from),
* abolition of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer that grows most of our food (it's made from natural gas),
* a shift to a largely vegan diet (which uses much less energy, especially if the consumers are in metropolitan areas far removed from the farms)
* a massive reduction in electricity consumption and
* restructuring communities to end long-distance daily commutes.
Peak Oil will radically change human civilization. Ignoring it as an issue -- until the panic sets in -- means that careful planing to cope with the crises and to use some of the oil as a "bridge" toward a more local, lower energy sustainable society is less likely...

...Monsanto to buy world largest cotton seed company
...takeover would give control over the US cotton seed market and make Monsanto the world largest cotton seed producer. A similar attempt had failed in 1998 when it was stopped by US anti-trust regulators. Monsanto would also aquire a highly controversial patent on the production of so called "Terminator seeds"...

...Energy Independence would require a change in the way we live

U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service issued updated estimates regarding 2006 farm income. Here are some quick statistics from the report: * Net farm income is forecast to be $54.4 billion in 2006, down from 2005 by $19.4 billion (a 26% decline). * Government payments are forecast to decline $6.2 billion. * The average family farm will generate 86.7 percent of their income from off-farm sources in 2006. In other words, less than 14% of income is generated from the farm, itself. Source:
