We need subsidized public transportation.

We need subsidized public transportation.
by Richard LeGrande and Jim McCue

As of the writing of this article, the Ship of Zion transportation project is unfunded. Riders are advised that, though a transportation agreement has been made in Harrisburg, operation is suspended until the money comes in. All those who recognize the need for public transportation, especially for those unable to get to work, are asked to contact their representatives and make known to them - We don't have a functioning city without public transportation.

Subsidized transportation is vital to business.

We can go around and around and argue till dizzy about which came first the chicken or the egg in regards to the need for affordable transportation and why should taxpayers pay for people they don't even know to get free rides to work and other necessities. But when it comes down to it it's a waste of time to try to judge whether a rider should or should not have managed their money better or worked harder or they wouldn't be in the fix of not being able to get to where they need to go. Bottom line is are you going to pitch in as a citizen and support public transit so that the city doesn't shut down, or are you just going to go into your philosophical shell and say I got mine and they deserve what problems they have and let things get even worse until all levels of our society are in the same morass as the poor are now.

We must maintain our productive capacity.

Productivity measured by businesspeople is often quite different than what you and I might judge to be productive. It doesn't matter to an individual business what is going on in the larger society - until things break down and businesses suffer because many can't afford a business's goods/services or their employees can't afford to get to work on their pay. Well that's what we have now, a whole system crisis. We're all involved and we're going to have to work together.

It appears that the hundreds of people who use the Ship of Zion weekly are still under the political radar screen . The State Legislature passed H.B. 1590 and the Governor signed the bill. Subsection 1516 authorized PennDOT to give high priority to providing financial assistance as match for federal programs such as
Job Access and Reverse Commute. Ship of Zion is a Job Access and Reverse Commute program. PennDot must notify Port Authority on the amount of funding for such programs and that costs for the programs can be incurred. The Ship of Zion will be ready to resume operation within days of our notification.

We would like to thank our riders for telling their Ship of Zion stories to the lawmakers and letting them know the importance of such programs to our community and ourselves.

We called, wrote and e-mailed our legislators and won the Harrisburg budget battle. We got on their radar screen and they responded to our need.
We have not won the public transportation war until the Ship of Zion is back making lives better in Hazelwood. We must direct even more energy to our local and county legislators, PennDot and Port Authority. Call, e-mail, write or visit our county executive , our city councilpersons and PennDot. Let us get on their
radar screens. Let them know the importance of the Ship of Zion to our community and lives.

Tonkin Gulf II and the Guns of August?
by Pat Buchanan 7/17/7
http://www.creators.com/opinion/pat-buchanan/tonkin-gulf-ii-and-the-guns-of-august.html

Is the United States provoking war with Iran, to begin while the Congress is conveniently on its August recess?

One recalls that it was in August 1964, after the Republicans nominated Barry Goldwater, that the Tonkin Gulf incident occurred.

Twice it was said, on Aug. 2 and Aug. 4, North Vietnamese patrol boats had attacked the U.S. destroyers Maddox and Turner Joy in international waters. The U.S. Senate responded by voting 88 to two to authorize President Johnson to assist any Southeast Asian nation whose government was threatened by communist aggression.

The bombing of the North began, followed by the arrival of U.S. Marines. America's war was on.

As Congress prepares for its August recess, the probability of U.S. air strikes on Iran rises with each week. A third carrier, the USS Enterprise, and its battle group is joining the Nimitz and Stennis in the largest concentration of U.S. naval power ever off the coast of Iran.

And Tonkin Gulf II may have already occurred.

In Baghdad, on July 1, Gen. Kevin J. Bergner charged that Iranians planned the January raid in Karbala, using commandos in American-style uniforms, that resulted in the death of five U.S. soldiers.

As The New York Times reports, this "marks the first time that the United States has charged that Iranian officials have helped plan operations against American troops in Iraq and have had advance knowledge of specific attacks that have led to the death of American soldiers."

The Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards is using Hezbollah to train Shiites to attack our soldiers and providing them with enhanced IEDs that have killed scores of U.S. troops, Bergner charged...

...something smells awfully fishy here...

If Iran's ally, the Maliki government, is our ally, and if Iran's enemy, al-Qaida in Iraq, is our enemy, why would Iran use the Quds Force to attack Americans and risk U.S. retaliation?...

...Iran is not initiating, but is responding to U.S.-inspired attacks inside Iran, in the Kurdish north, the Arab southwest and the Baluchi southeast of its country. Was Karbala an attempted kidnapping to exchange U.S. soldiers for the five Iranian "diplomats" we are holding?

Has Bush secretly authorized covert attacks inside Iran? Are U.S. and Israeli agents in Kurdistan behind the attacks across the border to provoke Iran?...

Why is Congress going on vacation? Why are a Democratic-controlled House and Senate not asking these questions in public hearings? Why is Congress letting Bush and Vice President Cheney decide whether we launch a third war in the Middle East?

Or is Congress in on it?

...In August of 2006 the news media reported on a Scripps Howard/Ohio University poll that found that "more than a third of the American public suspects that federal officials assisted in the 9/11 terrorist attacks or took no action to stop them so the United States could go to war in the Middle East". Also, it has been reported that "around 75 top professors and leading scientists believe the 911 attacks were puppeteered by war mongers in the White House to justify the invasion and the occupation of oil-rich Arab countries". This group is organized as the "9/11 Scholars for Truth" and its membership includes leading scientists and experts from universities across the US. In addition, there is now a growing number of elected officials and celebrities that are questioning the version of the 911 events as reported by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States...

Let's get with the program.

======
Ecosystem Earth as a whole is in a desperate struggle. Whether things are going to hell in a handbasket or entering a new age is beside the point. Something will survive, though we don't know what it will look like. Many things are dying, many being born.

The idea that we can completely control things is funny. We surf the changes as best we can, holding to our loved ones, accepting that we don't know the future only the direction we want to go. Only by accepting those things over which we have no power can we use what power we have to go in the direction of a better future.

The weather is going to get much more unstable. That's a given. Traditional weather patterns have been breaking down, and the pollutants already in the air - combined with the effects of all the other changes we humans have been making - will cause massive disruptions regardless of what we do now. The amount of carbon dioxide already in the atmosphere, for example, having already wrought huge changes in the ecosystem as a whole, is not going to disappear soon. In fact, there is a good chance that, with positive feedback effects such as from ocean acidification and the melting of formerly snow- or ice-covered areas - even were we humans somehow to completely stop emitting CO2 - it's concentration in the atmosphere may very well continue to rise.

We cannot assume we Americans will have enough food any more. We may be buried with fake food like soda pop and chips and cookies and other crap filled with sugar, salt, and chemicals. But fresh food not filled with synthetics? Ah, that's another thing. In a world both climatically and politically unstable, going back to much more locally grown food is necessary. But we also need the latest technology to preserve our present relatively high nutritional status. The trend to large mechanized food manufacturing systems is not going away; we need enclosed production facilities designed to handle the disruptions inevitable in a rapidly changing world.

The efficiency and types of energy needed to run our food system must be transformed. Rather than take the easy way out and say it's too late to save the planet, we can roll with the first rumblings of the new energy technologies coming on line. One is the GTECH Strategies biofuel project starting on the old mill site in Hazelwood. A few acres planted in mustard, sunflower, poplar, or switchgrass may not seem like much, but this is like a modern jet or magnetic levitation train that before you know it is traveling comfortably enormous speed.
Their website is http://gtechstrategies.com. Wholistic strategies such as this head toward getting us away from competition for fossil fuels and addiction to dangerous large nuclear power plants. They promise to reverse the trend toward more and more power in the hands of fewer and fewer people, while at the same time yielding more jobs and income for the local economy.

======
Get with the program - saving Planet Earth

I remember many years ago talking about some really dramatically destructive developments in the world, finishing by saying something like, "There's going to be a revolution", to which I got the reply, "It's about time." I was taken aback by the reply because I wasn't describing peaceful change. Now, this many years later, I'm thinking that we have had the destruction but not the revolution. In spite of all the revolutionary new technologies, and all the talk among radicals about revolutionary social change, other than progres...what have we got now but the backward (almost de-volutionary) fear-based refusal to change even in spite of the the obvious dangers of remaining on the stuck-on-stupid status quo. It is as if we have given up or have been bitten by a snake and are hypnotized, merely waiting for the end.
We know the federal government is down for the count and has become an obstruction. We know we can't continue with our addiction to fossil fuels and the mammoth enemy targets called nuclear power plants. We know of many

Since when did we humans get crowned top species?

Some microbes can live at above-boiling and below freezing temperatures.

Depending on who you speak to, we humans being are either better or worse than the other creatures in our world.

Some say we're better because we (supposedly) are the only ones who can think, feel, love, and work together to build a civilization. These people think that our brains are more advanced by far than other creatures, and so it's good that we've become the dominant species so that we can run things.
Some say we're the worst species, because we humans seem to be the only ones able to be sick enough to be brutal to each other for no reason, only killing for instance in order to survive while humans do all kinds of rotten things to other living things just for sheer sport.
We do seem to go to many places other creatures don't.

I think we homo sapiens are due for a fall. We're not that smart. The advantages we had were temporary. Look at what we're doing now; how smart is that? We're on a technological race to obliteration; "better" weapons fireable from space, more unemployment, computers and now robots taking over the jobs of humans, a government that will sell the most powerful technologies to just about whoever can get up the scratch (such as North Korea), military planners inventing "better" bugs (microbes more able to be used as weapons) for "research and defense" purposes (ignoring that neither the absolutely moral soldier or controllable microbe does not exist); taking down Earth's ecosystem piece by piece for very "practical" market reasons...the list goes on and on. Unless we manage to radically transform how we do things, war and/or disease and/or hunger and/or altered weather are going to kill off most of us. And that's the truth, plain and ugly.

But if, as a species, we manage to get off our high horse and open our minds and hearts to our fellow riders on the planet, maybe we've got a shot. We and all other living things are for the most part unknowingly dependent upon each other.

One of the most profound of wrong turns we apparently wiser humans took was that, rather than encourage the vast majority of microbes that are either directly or indirectly good for us, we so often have chosen to target the "bad" ones as enemies. Not realizing that, just as a gun kicks back as it's shot, there are inevitable backlashes when we kill living things. Our scientific arrogance has allowed us to

Oh, well let's get rid of them pesky cougars, and them raccoons are a pain in the ass too so we'll figger a way to get rid of them too, and the dang pigeons - they carry disease, so we'll put them in the same category as everybody else we want to designate as an enemy - possible disease carriers. Part of the rationale for the segregation of the Jews in the Holocaust was that they were suffering from so many diseases that they needed to be quarantined.

...the exploitation and torture of non-human animals comes from the same master/oppressor ideology that has created atrocities like African slavery, Native American genocide and the Jewish Holocaust. Marjorie Spiegel, author of
The Dreaded Comparison: Human and Animal Slavery,
notes:
"Comparing the suffering of animals to that of blacks (or any other oppressed group) is offensive only to the speciesist: one who has embraced the false notions of what animals are like. Those who are offended by comparison to a fellow sufferer have unquestioningly accepted the biased worldview presented by the masters. To deny our similarities to animals is to deny and undermine our own power. It is to continue actively struggling to prove to our masters, past or present, that we are similar to those who who have abused us, rather than to our fellow victims, those who our masters have also victimized.
...as divergent as the cruelties and the supporting systems of oppression may be, there are commonalities between them. They share the same basic relationship - that between oppressor and oppressed."...

...The 1994 Agreed Framework deal gave North Korea the capacity to generate enough nuclear fuel to produce almost 100 nuclear bombs per year. A 1999 congressional study undertaken by the House North Korea Advisory Group warned,

“Through the provision of two light water reactors [LWRs] under the 1994 Agreed Framework, the United States, through KEDO, will provide North Korea with the capacity to produce annually enough fissile material for nearly 100 nuclear bombs, should the Democratic People's Republic of Korea [DPRK] decide to violate the Nonproliferation Treaty [NPT].”

In April 2002 the Bush administration announced that it would release $95 million of American taxpayer’s dollars to begin construction of the ‘harmless’ light water reactors. Bush argued that arming the megalomaniac dictator Kim Jong-Il with the potential to produce a hundred nukes a year was, “vital to the national security interests of the United States.” Bush released even more money in January 2003, as reported by Bloomberg News,

“President George W. Bush is seeking $3.5 million for the international consortium that continues to build two nuclear reactors for North Korea, even as the U.S. confronts the communist regime over nuclear arms.”

The company that got the contract to deliver equipment and services to build the two light water reactor stations was ABB (Asea Brown Boveri), which describes itself as, “a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact.” The contract was valued at $200 million and was signed in January 2000.

It should not surprise us that our old friend Donald Rumsfeld, the man who paved the way for U.S. companies to sell Iraq chemical and biological weapons in 1983, was an executive director for ABB from 2000-2001...
