The Drug of War
4/27/6 Written by a fellow scout in the Shadow Recon Platoon of 2-63AR BN
http://ftssoldier.blogspot.com
...If one constantly exposes themselves to extreme situations, then all sensations there after of equal or lesser intensity offer no stimulation. A heroin addict must constantly increase the dose because the mind has grown tolerant to a lower dosage. A cocaine addict must snort more and more to obtain the same rush of endorphins that was felt the first time. This constant increase to obtain a desired effect is met with graduation to a more intense medium or fatality. However, a higher dosage or different medium does not always exist to take the addict to the next level, and even if he were to continue to utilize his current choices, the supply is not always infinite. When the supply diminishes, one is left numb to all sensation, and hence follows an increasingly desperate situation. For the soldier; war is his drug. His mind grows an addiction to its ravenous stimuli from abnormally stressful situations. His time within this medium is finite, and when it comes to an end, he will find it hard to deal with his unwanted addiction. This is the tragedy of all those who have fallen to the drug of war, myself included. Life becomes dull and frustrating. Normal situations make one feel a sense of anxiety, of desperation, as if constantly hoping for a sudden horrible rage to sweep across and take normal right down to hell, where things are violent, and gruesome, and stimulating, and the adrenaline flows. Where veins bulge and the mind sweats, and purpose is abundantly clear, to fight, to win, to love the drug of war. But it is no more. I feel the phantom left behind by this drug milling around in my mind, and I hear its fateful whispers, begging me to take it back to where the drug flows endless. I beat this demon down everyday, and come to grips with my reality...

...Hydrogen is “okay” if you take it from water, but we don’t want nuclear plants that are going to take hydrogen out of there air for the simple reason that the bi-product for hydrogen automobiles is water. If you take your oxygen out of the air and convert it to water, you’ve taken away what you need to breathe; you deplete the oxygen you need to breathe. It’s different with carbon dioxide because when you put that out into the air, if you have a lot of green plants, it converts it back into oxygen. There’s no way to convert water back into oxygen, to breathe. Okay? So you don’t do these kinds of things. But that’s being proposed. That’s part of Bush’s energy plan. Build more nuclear power plants in order to take oxygen out of the air and run cars with it [hydrogen]. You know, it’s very frustrating to know some of these things and see these plans that are just not going to work. We’ve already lost some of the oxygen in our air. We need it. You know, you have to breathe. These things have to be thought through. It’s not helpful to say nuclear power doesn’t produce carbon dioxide, therefore it’s okay. This is stupid. You don’t take one end-point and find one thing good about a technology and then run with it. You look at the whole picture, cradle-to-grave: everything it produces, everything it takes, every resource it uses. So we don’t need these big transmission systems either. We could get enough energy to run our houses, individual units - our cars are generators, our automobiles are individual generators. We can do these things. There are many viable solutions...I would recommend...Transforming the Global Biosphere, and many other sources and internet sites...

Surviving the Singularity

...we are approaching a change so dramatic that it qualifes as a singularity...a point at which all the rules and assumptions that worked before fail......What happens when robots are cheaper than even the most exploited of humans for almost every job?...If we fully emulate the structure of the human brain in silicon will the simulated brain experience consciousness?...
...human consciousness and machine intelligence will become integrated over time...
...to see ourselves in others, all others, not just our family, tribe or nation.
The changes we face call for a new transformation and expansion of values. We need a wider sense of self that encompasses not just humanity but all of consciousness...Our individual consciousness is...a partially isolated wave in an ocean of consciousness that is the physical universe...What will it be like to have a direct neural interface to the Internet and be in direct telepathic communication with anyone who wishes to communicate with us? What will it be like to have the world's knowledge and literature accessible by just thinking that we want to know something?...
The world is dealing badly with the much more limited change we face today. Nuclear weapons, global warming, the AIDS pandemic, genocide, ethnic cleansing, increasing concentration of wealth and terrorism fueled by religious fundamentalism are all terrible problems we are not handling well. These can all be effectively addressed. They are not...because powerful vested interests feel threatened by the solutions...
...The leaders of the United States and some other countries are able to use terrorism, deliberately or not, for political advantage rather than understanding and addressing it for what it is. The result is to amplify terrorism and feed religious fundamentalism rather than encouraging the freedom and understanding that will lead to the natural death of terrorism...
There is no guarantee that we will not fall into a horrible repressive world dictatorship, suffer a nuclear holocaust or purge humanity from the earth through huge unanticipated climate change. We have the power to create something approaching heaven on earth, but that will not prevent us from creating hell as the twentieth century has repeatedly demonstrated...
The one thing that has saved the biosphere of earth during previous changes that created mass extinction is biodiversity. Life on this planet will probably survive humanity, but we may not survive our own folly...The same technology that is making this evolutionary leap possible is making it far easier for huge institutions to dominate our economy, culture and politics. Concentration of wealth and power is dramatically and tragically accelerating. If this continues we will be facing at best creative stagnation and at worst a hell on earth as the powerful seek ever greater dominance.

The Duplicity of the War on Drugs
by Lee Rodgers

...declaring that America was awash in illegal drugs. The 1980's was a remarkable decade in international events: the Cold War was coming to an end, and the U.S. military-industrial complex was facing spending cuts, with myriad economic ramifications. The U.S. had gone through its longest period of peace since the end of World War I, and many Americans were calling for a Peace Dividend. While it may seem coincidental that the war on drugs was contemporaneous with the end of the Cold War and was punctuated by the Iran-Contra affair, a closer look at the war on drugs reveals disturbing patterns.
Critics of the Cold War have long pointed out that the Cold War was a convenient vehicle for the military-industrial complex to acquire an increasing share of the federal budget, regardless of the decline in threat posed by the Soviet Union. The war on drugs, it has been noted, arrives with all the familiar rubrics of constant threat and ceaseless terror...ex-DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) agent Michael Levine has commented, "with the fade of communism (the Pentagon and CIA) are building a pretext for maintaining their budgets." (Esquire, March 1991, pg. 136) Indeed, after Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, the rhetoric of the war on drugs changed, with the Bush administration declaring victory in the war against drugs late that year...

Pitt scientists get $1.3M grant for bird flu vaccine
by Jennifer Bails
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Friday, August 25, 2006
University of Pittsburgh researchers said Thursday they have received a $1.3 million federal grant to begin production of a promising new bird flu vaccine they hope will protect people from the deadly virus.

Pitt virologist Dr. Andrea Gambotto announced in January he had genetically engineered a vaccine that protected 100 percent of mice and chickens from illness and death caused by a strain of avian influenza that has decimated poultry flocks and killed dozens of people in Asia...

The vaccine will be created and rigorously tested in Pitt's Good Manufacturing Practices laboratory, a "clean" facility in Hazelwood that meets the federal criteria for making biological products that will be administered to people...

...Energy Independence would require a change in the way we live

Solar, wind, biomass and other technologies could only make the US achieve "energy independence" if Americans were to radically reduce energy consumption. These steps would include

* abandoning jet travel (which won't be powered by windmills or solar cells),
* eating food locally and in season (which will be difficult given the near total amnesia in our society about how to grow food or even where food comes from),
* abolition of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer that grows most of our food (it's made from natural gas),
* a shift to a largely vegan diet (which uses much less energy, especially if the consumers are in metropolitan areas far removed from the farms)
* a massive reduction in electricity consumption and
* restructuring communities to end long-distance daily commutes.

Peak Oil will radically change human civilization. Ignoring it as an issue -- until the panic sets in -- means that careful planing to cope with the crises and to use some of the oil as a "bridge" toward a more local, lower energy sustainable society is less likely...

...Propping up a GNP (Gross National Product) by selling the social safety net" spells national emergency. Given that so many countries are experiencing this nightmare, it is an international emergency...

Corporate Takeover: an interview with Jim Gollin 5/23/5

...used confrontational tactics to open a dialogue that ended with cooperative written agreements: In 1999 Home Depot decided that it will not sell old-growth products, and in 2004 Citigroup agreed that it will not finance the destruction of old growth anywhere in the world...
...metaphor of Indra's net-that everything is connected to and reflects everything else-has been particularly effective...When one shines, we all shine, and when one is occluded, we're all occluded. This interconnected type of thinking does not come automatically, certainly not in our culture, so we must continually remind ourselves of it...
...You have to get their attention. What we do is always nonviolent both to people and to property. So it's really an aggressive form of speech designed to make them very uncomfortable. It's a way of getting a conversation started...we found someone who worked at Home Depot who liked what we were doing, and he leaked the code for the intercom systems...We had volunteers go in, punch in the code, and broadcast over the entire store: "Attention, Home Depot shoppers! There's a sale on wood in Aisle 13. This wood has been ripped from the heart of the Amazon basin. There may be some blood spilled on the floor, so please be careful. This wood is leading to the dislocation of indigenous communities, soil degradation, and the destruction of Mother Earth." We did this in 162 stores on the same day. At the Home Depot headquarters in Atlanta the phones were ringing and ringing, and the people who worked there didn't know what to do. It doesn't stop anybody from shopping; it's amusing. And it broke the ice...civil disobedience in direct action...not worried about rattling the teacups...
...corporations are run by human beings walking the same earth, breathing the same air, with the same concerns as you or me. You have to get to that common place with them. They want to feel good when they go to sleep and when they're bouncing their grandchildren on their knees...
...Kinko's and Lowe's sat down at the negotiating table with RAN and Boise. Kinko's said, "Unless you stop cutting old growth we won't buy any of your paper." Lowe's said, "Unless you stop cutting old growth, we won't buy any of your wood." Because Kinko's was the largest customer for Boise's paper and Lowe's for their lumber, it worked...branching out, taking our former adversaries and converting them...
...sadness. We'll still have an opportunity to deal with the inequality between the rich and the poor in fifty years, whereas when we lose the forests and everything in them, they're gone... sadness...In me it leads to activism...to avoid the sorrow...
Thich Nhat Hahn...concept of interbeing was very helpful for me. I remember him holding up a piece of paper, and saying, "What do you see here?" And he said, "I see some clouds and the rain and there's the tree and wood that the paper is made from."
With the Boise campaign we used essentially the same analysis. We asked, "How are we going to get Boise to stop cutting old-growth forests?" It was like pulling out that piece of paper and saying, "Okay, I see Kinko's and Lowe's and I hear the sound of consumers in a marketing campaign." It took seeing how everything interconnects like Indra's net.

George Bush & John Kerry: Blood Brothers

...Kerry Commission, described in the Senate Committee Report on Drugs, Law Enforcement and Foreign Policy as "focusing on allegations of illegal gun-running and narcotics trafficking associated with the Contra war against Nicaragua" in relation to the CIA, Department of Justice, the U.S. State Department, and the office of the President and Vice President. The testimony that took place during these trials (both in open and closed door sessions) was quite possibly the most damning ever against our federal government, yet mysteriously, nearly all of it was suppressed and not widely reported in the mainstream media...
